Four illuminated buttons beneath the VU meter are used to select ‘normal’ or +20dB of gain, phantom power, high or normal ‘plate’ voltage, and polarity inversion. ART tube compressors utilize optical electronics , coupled with a 12AT7 vacuum tube gain stage for superior musical performance. Unlike typical compressors which use VCAs to control level detection, ART tube compressors are very musical, expressive and natural sounding. The best results for me has been using premium vacuum tubes. So before giving up on the MPA II as a guitar preamp I bought a gain matched pair of Psvane 12AX7-S ECC82 Art Series tubes with the gold pins. The MPA II uses one in each channel and are very easy to replace. The tubes completely transformed the preamp.
If ad is up – it is still available – pick up only please ~Respectfully~ I will not respond to low ballers as this gear was purchased brand new and used literally for a few hours – … Thanks, this was a wonderful and helpful post that was easily found via a search engine . I don’t want to Behringer up a Neve preamp etc. It solved a headache I have had for a while. I thought my pre-amp was broken but after following this now I can start to record some vocals.
Love the preamps on the Apollo but prefer the John Hardy. Was using xlr and kept the volume down on Apollo but I guess the default gain on the preamp would make my signal too Fat! So the hook up was made I went into the Guitar Insert and it worked / Went into the XLR Channel one with the TRS Balanced and it worked. Cranked up the volume to about -54 db and peaked at -3.75 db. This control optimizes the input signal level before the tube gain is applied.
Digital Mpa 2
First of all, it is one of very few in its category with impedance control for each channel. Impedance is very interesting function and very versatile, because it doesnt affect directly the impedance in microphone, only signal that comes into preamp. I found a lot of new colours for many microphones just tweaking this one. MPA has also TRS input and can react as DI. If you use it this way, impedance is fixed so you cannot use impedance knob, but you have option to setting high pass filter.
