I’m the deputy managing editor of the hardware team at PCMag.com. Then you’ve caught me testing gear and editing reviews of laptops, desktop PCs, and tons of other personal tech. (Reading this at night? Then I’m probably dreaming about all those cool products.) I’ve covered the consumer tech world as an editor, reporter, and analyst since 2015. I do miss the screen real estate if I’m honest, but a week in and it feels like the right choice. It is not a cramped display and feels reminiscent of the 15″. But it is a lot more portable and I’m loving it for that. Yeah, the MacBook Pro 16-inch is one of the best laptops creative professionals can buy.
- Just know that they look incredible, with eye-watering brightness in sunny HDR scenes and inky black darkness in night shots.
- The new model does not, so at a casual glance, it looks like the last model was much thinner.
- In addition, iPhone 14 Pro models are also tipped to gain much faster charging.
- My use case for the 16-inch MacBook Pro ensures that any concerns over the weight are short-lived and completely banished by the utility it offers.
- It’s far more immersive than the sound output from either the 13-inch MacBook Pro or the 2020 MacBook Air, though not markedly better to my ears than the equally impressive speaker setup of the old 16-inch model.
XDR in Apple lingo is for “extreme dynamic range,” its marketing term for what many other OEMs refer to as “high dynamic range,” or HDR. The only significant change to the keyboard deck is the addition of a new black surrounding panel Unionville Lions Club that matches the color of the keycaps. It’s a striking contrast to the rest of the chassis if you opt for the silver color, although there’s less of a difference with the darker Space Gray option. (In both cases, the keys and keyboard backplate are the same black color.) On previous MacBook Pros, the keyboard backplate matched the silver or Space Gray color of the rest of the chassis. The MagSafe power connector (now dubbed “MagSafe 3”) is the final port making its reappearance on the new MacBook Pro, offering a dedicated power connector that’s a cinch to attach. (Magnets guide it into place.) The new connector isn’t compatible with previous MacBook MagSafe adapters, and it is not compatible with MagSafe accessories for the iPhone and iPad.

I love that it has more ports than on competing laptops, as well as an SD port. The pros are its integration with apple products, ease-of-use, trackpad and keyboard, design, and reliable performance. Our 14-inch review model was equipped with an M1 Pro sporting 16 GPU cores, 32GB of RAM and a 1TB SSD. The 16-inch had the 32 GPU core M1 Max, a 2TB SSD and a whopping 64GB of RAM. (This, by the way, marks the first time I’ve reviewed a laptop with that much RAM.) Both of Apple’s new chips also feature 10 CPU cores — for comparison, the M1 had eight CPU cores and eight GPU cores.
It handles reflections well and gets more than bright enough to combat glare in well-lit settings. It’s a fairly thin device that should fit into most bags, so it’s easy to carry around. Battery life is great, enough to get you through a couple of movies and TV shows. Unfortunately, even though it has a good contrast ratio for an IPS panel, blacks still look grayish when viewed in the dark. My first backpacking laptop, a MacBook Air, didn’t have too much storage space so I kept a lot of my photos and videos on Dropbox and stored my movies on a nearly bulletproof portable hard drive. The device doesn’t have as much storage space or processing power as its sister product, the Surface Book, so an external drive is crucial!
About Apple
Gone are the days of living with four compact Thunderbolt 3 ports, a headphone jack, and being forced to live the dock or dongle life. As users of the Titanium G4 when it first shipped the new 16-inch MacBook Pro’s chassis shape is very reminiscent of that, and not the Intel 16-inch MacBook Pro. The Lenovo Ideapad is one of the best budget options for digital nomads.
You won’t quite get these speeds on the 512GB model, though. In our testing, we saw the same read speed at about 5.3 gigabytes per second, but a drop in write speeds to about 4 gigabytes per second. This is entirely due to less parallelization with the smaller storage capacity. On the M1 Max, your starting point is that same 32GB cap, but you can go up to 64GB if you want. The GPU also uses the Unified RAM, so it makes sense to go all-out on memory when configuring it at purchase.

The 14-inch model, in particular, will probably give you the vapors if you’re comparing it to the 13-inch MacBook Pro. But in the world of gaming and high-end productivity notebooks, Apple’s pricing isn’t that far off. The Razer Blade 14, for example, is just two hundred dollars less than the MacBook Pro 14-inch. Dell’s XPS 15 OLED is around $500 cheaper than the cheapest 16-inch MBP, but that’s with a CPU that’s much slower than Apple’s. Once you start speccing that machine up, though, you’ll likely pay close to $2,500. However, the MacBook Pro isn’t the only desktop-replacement in a relatively thin and light form factor.

This time around, I got the 14″ and have zero regrets. Love this size. It’s perfect. 13″ is a little small. A subreddit dedicated to Apple and their most innovative product yet. I have the same 2015 MBP as you currently and am also looking to upgrade.
